JOB DESCRIPTION

The Royal Standard currently operates its programmes through a team of between 4-6 Artistic Directors and an Executive Director. These roles are voluntary and provide an opportunity for early career arts professionals, offering valuable experience of curating, project management, exhibition planning and budgeting in an established arts organisation.

The Royal Standard’s programme is divided into two separate threads, each running parallel and informing the other. The exhibition programme aims to deliver between 4 – 6 shows per year, and the studio programme devises and delivers opportunities for studio members and organisational development including residencies and crits. It is the responsibility of the Artistic Director to develop, plan and deliver each programme.

 

KEY TASKS

Exhibition and events delivery:

  • planning and curating group and solo exhibitions
  • liaising with artists and curators to commission new work or to exhibit previous works
  • producing exhibition schedules, project reports and press releases
  • working with the Board of Directors to produce budgets for each event and ensure that they are maintained
  • producing risk assessments for each exhibition
  • marketing the exhibition programme via social media, the website and physically
  • installing exhibitions, including technical support for artists
  • maintaining the exhibition, ensuring it is invigilated and that the space is accessible and safe for visitors
  • taking down exhibitions and returning exhibited work

 

Studio development delivery:

  • researching and liaising with similar arts organisation across the UK and internationally, providing opportunities for studio members to travel in order to exhibit and make new work
  • responding to studio member requirements and concerns
  • holding 4 meetings per year (including an AGM) with the studio members
  • planning and delivering studio exchanges and residencies for studio members and artists in other cities
  • interviewing potential new studio members
  • responding to building maintenance requirements

 

Governance:

  • reporting to the Board of Trustees 4 times annually
  • working alongside the Board of Directors to produce budgets and fundraising for the programmes
  • working in accordance to The Royal Standard’s charitable policies and documents

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

Essential:

  • An in-depth knowledge of contemporary artists and organisations across the UK and internationally
  • Some experience in planning and delivering exhibitions and other related events
  • A willingness to work evenings and weekends, responding to the demands of the role
  • A willingness to carry out laborious tasks
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively when in a demanding situation
  • Some experience of fundraising and budget maintenance for events

 

Desirable:

  • A degree-level qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. fine art, curating, art history), or equivalent professional experience
  • A full UK driving license
