We aim to support emergent, artist-led practices via programming, commissioning, and providing work space to artists.
The Royal Standard is an artist-led studio, gallery and social workspace based in Liverpool. We offer the city’s artistic and cultural community a location for meeting, making, talking and engagement whilst acting as a catalyst for the most exciting and vibrant visual art in the UK.
Since its inception in 2006, TRS has established itself as a dynamic hub of contemporary artistic practice, housing 45 artists, 5 project spaces, and a large gallery space. Our project partners include Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Bluecoat, FACT, Liverpool Biennial (LB) and critical writing journal The Double Negative.
We are based in new architect designed bespoke premises in the Baltic Triangle in Liverpool where we have successfully relocated to within the Northern Lights complex run by Baltic Creative. TRS operates an exhibition programme and a studio development programme, fostering opportunities for exhibiting artists and studio members simultaneously. This allows for constantly shifting programme which includes curated shows, residencies and studio exchanges, group critiques and research opportunities.
The Royal Standard is currently run by a team of four to six voluntary artistic directors, with a new team appointed on a two-year rolling basis, enabling the organisation’s ideas and energy to remain fresh and continuing to offer opportunities to new groups of emerging artists. In addition to the team artistic directors we currently 2 paid temporary administrators, a steering committee and 4 trustees.
