Mia’s interested in the formalities of portraiture painting and the limits of the medium. The connotations, expectations, redundancies and clichés are all relevant to her practice. She tries to challenge the significance that portraiture carries, giving seemingly insignificant images a sense of importance. More recently she’s been exploring ‘flat pack paintings,’ combinations of paintings and how her work exists off the canvas stretcher.
Recent exhibitions include Six of one, Half a dozen of the other, The Newbridge Project, Newcastle (2018); Bish, Bash, Bosh, We the North, Liverpool (2017); BARTR Artist-in-Residence, Muszi, Budapest (2016) and Company, Summerhall, Ediburgh (2016).
